Menulog’s Exit: What It Means for Hospitality Venues in Australia

Australia’s food delivery scene just changed — again. In news that’s rocked the industry, Menulog has announced it’s shutting down operations after nearly two decades.

With their website and app going dark from November 26, it’s the latest sign that the race to win in food delivery is tougher than ever — even for long-time players.

So… What Happened?

Despite being the only major Australian-born food delivery platform, Menulog just couldn’t keep up. According to reports, they’ve been navigating “challenging circumstances” for years. Their financials tell the story:

  • Losses of over $32 million in 2024

  • Market share slid from 24% to under 10% in just a couple of years

  • Exit from NZ in 2023

  • Parent company Just Eat Takeaway shifting focus back to European markets

It’s the same story that led to Deliveroo bowing out in 2022. And now, it leaves Uber Eats and DoorDash as the dominant players — a duopoly that doesn’t bode well for small businesses or consumer choice.

What Does This Mean for Venues?

Fewer platforms = less competition = less leverage for venues.

As Shannon Hautot, Co-Founder of HungryHungry, told the Sydney Morning Herald:

“We typically have an issue with competition in Australia. The hope will be that today’s news doesn’t signal another step towards what would be a damaging monopoly.”

He’s right. With fewer delivery partners in the mix, venues lose control over margins, marketing, and customer data. And when big platforms flex their fees, small businesses get squeezed.

So What’s the Move?

Own your delivery. That doesn’t mean hiring a fleet of drivers — it means white-labelling your delivery channel, so your customers get convenience, and you keep control.

With HungryHungry’s White Label Delivery, you get:

  • Delivery without relying on Uber or DoorDash

  • No commission fees eating into your margins

  • You own the customer relationship

  • A direct way to build loyalty and repeat orders

The writing is on the wall — the delivery space is consolidating. Now is the time to take back ownership of your digital channels before it becomes even harder to compete.

Final Thoughts

Menulog’s shutdown is big news. But it’s also a wake-up call.
